Hi,
Welcome back to “how to build a computer from scratch for beginners” the five-minute guide. If you have suggestions to make this shorting comment below. In this video, we are going to talk about RAM or memory. If you haven’t seen the previous two videos, take a moment to watch those so you are up to speed on what is going to be discussed.
Now the RAM we are going to talk about is going to be one of the few things that aren’t really going to have a tier level. This is really just because of the type of performance I’ve seen with RAM there really is only going to be a few speeds to pick from. We’ll talk about those later in the video.
The biggest factor in RAM is going to be whether you picked Intel or AMD. Now Intel generally doesn't have many differences with performance but AMD does have some variants. I’ll talk about that in the breakdown.
I do want to make a note about RAM. Generally, you’ll see RAM like “DDR4-2400” or “DDR4-3600” and so on. Really these are the frequencies they take data to and from the CPU. Higher the number the more data, but at the same time the higher the number the longer it takes to move the data. That’s where the CL# comes in. Simply the lower that number is, the lower the latency is. Is that better? We’ll I’ll talk about that in the breakdown.
Breakdown:
From the testing I’ve seen, Intel doesn’t get much of a boost for gaming or productivity when selecting RAM speeds from DDR4 2400 up to 4600. This means that the CL# is pretty well balanced for all the frequencies. If you can get a good deal on the 4600’s that are around the same price as 3000, go for it! If you have an Intel chip that is.
Now on the flip side, we have AMD. They do have some small improvements on both gaming and productivity when it comes to their frequency speeds. Now the sweet number for the best of both is CL16. That seems to give you the best frequency to latency. The frequencies I mostly see this at 3600 to 3800. If you can find 3800 CL16’s, they are some of the best but honestly, if the 3600 CL16’s are better priced, those are great as well.
Recommended RAM
- For most user's 16GB is becoming cheaper and cheaper
- 32GB if you want a bit more wiggle room Hit me up with any questions in the comments. Thanks for watching “how to build a computer from scratch for beginners” the five-minute guide and we’ll see you in the next video.
