How to Build a Computer from Scratch for Beginners - 5 Minute Guide - Cases

Updated: Jul 28

Hi,

Welcome back to “how to build a computer from scratch for beginners” the five-minute guide. The name… yeah it’s just as long this year as last year, Merry New Year!

In this video, we are going to talk about Cases. Cases? Isn’t that just a box to put parts in? Well yes, but there are a few key things to consider when looking for a case and I’ll talk about that here shortly.

If you haven’t seen our other videos up to this point, take a moment to go watch those to get up to speed. No, it’s ok, I’ll wait.

Ok, so now for Cases. Yes, they hold the parts but there are a few basic things to consider when looking for a case.

The first is airflow. Where will you be putting this computer? If you are going to have it in a tight space, you’ll want to have enough airflow to get the heat out of the case. If you are going to put it on the floor with all the pet hair, might want to get a case that has mess over the fans for easy cleaning and so it doesn’t get into the case as well.

The second would be the size of the motherboard. Believe it or not, not ALL motherboards are like gloves… not “one size fits all” here. Larger or longer motherboards require larger cases.

This is where some terms like ATX, iTX, e-atx, and such come from. I’ll put the sizing details in the description.

Breakdown:

Now in most cases, try and look for something with good airflow and is rated for “ATX” or whichever your motherboard is rated. Check the documentation to make sure. Rarely will you see an ATX case NOT fit an iTX or mini-ATX motherboard.

High range – NZXT H510i

One side note, there are some cases that are cheap that are that way for a reason. If you don’t mind having troubles with installing things or some things being cramped then by all means get the cheaper buy. Personally, I’d like to spend a little more to make sure I can install things easier. Think about it later if a part fails. Just some food for thought.

Hit me up with any questions in the comments. Thanks for watching “how to build a computer from scratch for beginners” the five-minute guide and we’ll see you in the next video.
