How to Build a Computer from Scratch for Beginners - 5 Minute Guide - Hard Drives

Hi,

Welcome back to “how to build a computer from scratch for beginners” the five-minute guide. Insert joke about how long the title… If you haven't seen any of the other videos in this series, please head over to the playlist.

Alright, in this video we will discuss Hard Drives!!!! Because why not, you need storage to save stuff for the long term and that’s important to building a computer. As I stated, hard drives are the components that will store your data for the long term. There are several options to what types of drives you can get, and we’ll get to those later in the video. First, we are going to talk about what was. Hard drives have come so far and just in the last decade, they have become not only larger but faster too. From traditional spin drives to hybrid drives to non-moving parts. It boggles the mind how we have gone from moving/spinning drives to non-moving parts that last. After all, RAM has been around for a while. The hard drives have just incorporated the technology from them into new hard drives, bet you didn’t know that… yeah, I know things.

Now the different types of hard drives. Really there are 3 general types, Hard Drives/Spin Drives, Solid State Drives, and M.2… which I guess fall into the solid-state, but I put them in their own category for a reason that I’ll explain in a moment. Spin drives are still a thing because they have figured out how to make them the same size and yet hold more data. We can get a 12 to 16TB drive now and almost the same price… wow. Solid-state drives are the same form factor, so they look like regular hard drives but don’t weigh as much and have a bunch of chips in them instead of platers that spin. This technology has made them much faster at moving data but might not quite have the longevity that spin drives have. They do use a fraction of the power as well, not needing a motor helps. Finally, m.2 solid-state is here because they look more like RAM chips and have a totally different slot they use. That’s why they are in their own category and they use EVEN less power and can be EVEN faster than other SSD’s.

Breakdown:

So hard drives are not going to really have tiers. Just really going to give recommendations from each of the three types because they are nice to have and depending on what you are doing, could use them all in a build.

- Spin drives I’d have to say that between 2 to 4TB is the good price to byte. These drives are good all around and give cheap long-term storage for any build.

- Solid-State drives are a bit more expensive for the storage you get. Most people get smaller drives to have their computers boot up fast from these and then get an inexpensive Spin drive to put games and programs on. Honestly, you could do that or spend a little more and only install what you play.

- The m.2s are used similarly to solid-state but they are even faster. They use less power as well.
